Q: What is Chiropractic Care?

A: Chiropractic care supports the concept that maintaining the proper function of the musculoskeletal and nervous system promotes better health. When the vertebrae and the spine are not functioning correctly, the condition is known as vertebral subluxation. The function of these joints can be hindered by trauma, disease, and many other stressors that cause a vertebral subluxation. Chiropractors adjust the joints of the spine and other joints throughout the body as well as work with muscles and exercise in order to improve function and give the body the opportunity to heal itself, without drugs, and with good nutrition and  a healthy lifestyle.

Q: What is an Adjustment?

A: Chiropractic care is known for its use of "adjustment," sometimes called "manipulation." An adjustment is a precise, usually painless procedure in which the trained doctor of chiropractic exerts directed quick pressure by hand into specific joints of the spine and other areas of the body. When a thorough examination reveals joints that are not functioning properly, adjustment techniques are applied in order to correct the function or mobility of the joint. The improved joint function relieves associated, swelling, inflammation, muscle tension, shoulder pain, and nerve pain. It improves balance and promotes general healing.

Adjustments are often performed manually by the doctors. However, they may also be performed with an instrument called an "activator." The activator provides adjustments that require no stretching and no joint sounds. At times adjustments are performed by particular blocking and breathing procedures as well. Most adjustments are painless. In fact, many patients comment about immediate relief from their pain after an adjustment.

Q: What Should I Expect If I Become a Patient?

A: You will be asked to complete a comprehensive health history form, which will require you to provide information on your health history and problems, diet, exercise, occupation, and lifestyle. After reviewing your health status, the doctor will perform a chiropractic examination, which will include palpation (examination by touch), testing range of motion and strength, neurological and orthopedic observations, and surface electrical conduction tests, as well as x-rays when indicated. After a complete analysis of your history and examination, you will be given a report of the findings as well as your care options so you may make an informed choice about chiropractic care.

Q: How Will My Progress be Monitored?

A: Your progress while under care will be carefully monitored. For example, your subjective improvement, as well as objective findings and changes, will be noted. Your care plan will be modified to meet your changing condition needs.
